Deepak Chopra and Stephen Colbert, televison dialog, December 19, 2006
S: I’ve been looking forward to this interview since my last life. Are you a prophet?
D: I’m a prophet if you spell it profit
S: Reality isn’t as real as we think?
D: You are my projection, my illusion
S: Oh really?
D: I’m experiencing life after death right now with you.
S: We are all here, I am, you are, he she or it is, and this table is here.
D: There is only one of us
S: Yes, me. If you are saying that there is only one reality, mine just happens to be realer than anyone else’s
D: The Islamic fundamentalists think the same way
S: Well, I will beat them at their own game
D: I’m sure you can.
S: Thank you very much. But reality does exist, we are all here, talking
D: It is a projection of our consciousness, our perception, our cognition, our emotions, our biology, our behavior, our personal relationships, our social relationships, our environment, it’s all a projection of our consciousness. So if my consciousness is constricted and afraid, then all of those things will reflect fear. But on the other hand if I have love, compassion and expansion, then all my cognitions and experiences will reflect that. All of reality is a projection of a deeper self and if you get in touch with that, you realize infinite possibilities.
S: If there are infinite possibilities, can we win in Iraq?
D: The question is not whether we can win, but can we find creative solutions? We have all these major wars on cancer, on aids, on poverty, on drugs, which are metaphors. S: Those aren’t metaphors, those are realities. Its us or them.
D: It’s a question of whether we have a violent mind…
S: We are fighting fire with fire. People attack us, we have to attack back, that is how the world works, my friend. We are all snakes in a pit together. The snake that swallows the others is the giant anaconda. Isn’t that the law of the jungle, the most natural way we act to survive?
D: The survival of the fittest was the old paradigm, the new paradigm is the survival of the wisest. If we are to survive, wisdom will have to become the new paradigm.
S: To have wisdom, don’t you have to be old? I have the wisdom of aging and the biology of youth, a combination of both.
S: You can have both at the same time? How do you do that?
D: Experience.
S: What happens after death.
D: What is eternity like? What happens to the space in this room if the world collapses?
S: I call my insurance company.
D: But the space remains if the world collapses. What happens to us if the television turns off? What happens when we die is that a certain line of communication disappears. You are not your nervous system, but the user of your nervous system.
S: Do you mean that when I die I lose a certain line of communication and I go up to the pearly gates and meet an old man with a beard.
D: If you want, you can upgrade the illusion.
S: What about hell, is that an illusion?
D: That’s downgrading the illusion.
S: Can I get either one cheaper than the other?
D: Hell costs a little more because if you were in heaven, you would be doomed to eternal senility.
S: Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens?
D: There is no creativity if there is no discontent. You need divine discontent in order to create.
S: We see ourselves on earth as discontent when we go on to heaven?
D: We can upgrade the illusion. The only thing that remains is you.
S: Does the $24 cost of this book upgrade or downgrade me?
D: It’s a must-read for anyone who is going to die.
S: The book is Life After Death, its going to come in handy.
